He tries to consummate their marriage on their wedding night, but Nandini is disgusted by his approach and acts coldly towards him. He asks her for an explanation but she chooses to remain silent.
Nandini finally receives Sameer's letters and Vanraj walks in on her reading them. Upon meeting Sameer, she apologises to him and tells him that she has come to love Vanraj. She reflects on the unwavering love and devotion that Vanraj has showered upon her throughout their relationship, and realises that Vanraj is her true soul mate. Sameer realizes that she doesn't have that love for him which he saw in her long back. Heartbroken, Sameer lets her go back to Vanraj which she readily accepts and Sameer breaks down after she leaves and his mother consoles him. She runs back to him and he tells her that he cannot live without her. Vanraj adorns a mangala sutra around her neck and they embrace each other.

He later tells Preeti that the children are the result of a clandestine affair his father had with his secretary. The latter contacted Avinash on her deathbed to beg him to take care of the children. His father flat out refuses to acknowledge the children. Avinash takes them in and moves out of his parents' house. Preeti works at Avinash's office and helps him take care of the children at home. The two live well together as friends but this union invites a social opprobrium and strong uproar, and there is no other solution but marriage. They soon fall in love, and Avinash decides to ask Preeti for her hand in marriage. She refuses as she see that as another favor and kind act, and Avinash respects her decision. Both of them attend a wedding where Preeti sees that her friend is marrying Babloo, the man who had raped her so Avinash beats him up and the police arrest Babloo and take him away.
After a year, Avinash's childhood friend Khushi (Sonali Bendre) returns from America, she tries to win his heart, as she is in love with him. This arouses jealousy in Preeti, and she realizes the depth of her love for Avinash. Avinash's parents never approved of his living arrangement with Preeti and want him to marry Khushi. Avinash's mother eventually approaches Preeti and insists that she will drop dead with shame if her son marries a rape victim. She begs Preeti to send Avinash to Khushi. Instead of being outraged at this insulting request, Preeti sheds a few tears and agrees. Avinash moves back to his parents' house and agrees to marry Khushi. But Preeti's friend tells Khushi about what Avinash's mother did. Khushi calls off the wedding and tells Avinash the truth. In the end Preeti and Avinash are reunited.

Unemployed Mannu (Ajay Devgn), from Bhagalpur in search of money to finance his new business as he has lost his earlier job at a jute mill. On his quest, he visits Neeru (Aishwarya Rai) in Calcutta, to whom he was engaged six years ago. During the rainy evening, the couple look back on about their former love and how each ended up in their current situation.
Neeru pretends to lead a happy and prosperous life. She gestures to her former lover during various instances, particularly when the door bell rings and she persuades Mannu not to open the door. They go on talking about their past and present with multiple flashbacks.
The raincoat comes to play when Neeru wears it to go out and bring some food. The landlord (Annu Kapoor) speaks of the real situation of the household, and prompts Mannu to give his borrowed money as rent for the house. Mannu leaves a letter under the bed sheet explaining things. When Neeru returns he does not say anything about his encounter with her landlord. After some time Mannu leaves. Later, when he puts his hand inside the pocket of his raincoat, he finds a pair of gold bangles that belonged to Neeru, along with a letter saying that she had a lot of money and he should have told her about his financial situation. She had actually read a letter that was inside the raincoat that informed her about Mannu's condition.

In fact, most of time, Aishwariya looks quite plain. What is more, she seems to have made an earnest effort to emote, using less of her body and limbs and more of her face, and eyes in particular. Ajay Devagan as Manoj is Devagan, as we have seen him in an umpteen number of parts earlier, although Ghosh draws the actor out of a certain woodenness that he is known for".

Her body language is a strange mix of a passive housewife and a passionate girlfriend. Though the effort to sound rustic shows, the restraint in her dialogue delivery and performance is commendable. Hesitation, desperation, humiliation -- Ajay Devgan conveys them eloquently. He particularly stands out in the scenes where he cries in the bathroom, or begs Neeru not to marry someone else".

Review of the film :
This film are with mostly positive critics reviews, specially Aishwariya Rai Highly appreciated for it's performance in the film.Aishwarya has given one of her finest performances and one of the best in cinema.
Ekanshu Khera of Planet Bollywood gave the film an 8 star from 10 star. He noted that the cinematography to be beautiful and was pleased that the singing was not lip synched. However, he said that the "dubbing leaves much to be desired" and would have preferred a different director dub it in Hindi. He also noted that the film appeals "to a niche audience due to its periodic settings and ideologies."
Margaret Pomeranz of ABC Australia gave it 3 star from 5 stars, writres that "the insight it gives into Indian culture and customs, is interesting and that tends to overcome the slight impatience with the overload of emotions."
David Stratton, also of ABC, gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, commenting on how the film version was edited 40 minutes shorter but that it was beautifully acted and fascinating.
