Film Story : Nyaydaata :

Deputy Commissioner of Police single-handedly arrests a notorious gangster by the name of Jabbar, only to find out that Jabbar has used his political connections and got off prison without being charged for any offense. Jabbar threatens to kill Ram and his family (wife and a son), but Ram disregards his threats, only to get his son killed in a car bomb. Ram vows to avenge his son's death, but is unable to prove anything, gets frustrated, is reprimanded by his superiors, and ultimately ends up resigning from the police force.

Years later, Ram's brother, Rahul, is in love with a young woman named Ayesha, and both would like to get married. Ram goes to meet with Ayesha's dad, Jwala Prasad, and when he does so, recognizes him as the man who killed one Navinkumar. Ram threatens to expose Jwala, and has him arrested. What Ram does not know that Jwala is just another alias for Jabbar - the man who had killed his son years ago - and now Jabbar is all set to kill Ram and the rest of his family as well.

The film is based on the stage musical Mamma Mia!. This film marked the debut of Sanober Kabir. Randhir Kapoor made a comeback to acting with this film after 12 years. It was also the last film in which Rakesh Roshan played a major role.

The lyrics of the song "Biwi Hain Cheez Sajawat Ki " were changed due to censor problems.

The film was named Mother 98. The film's audio CD and cassettes were also released with that name. When it was delayed for over a year, Sawan Kumar Tak removed the "98" from the name.

• Sukanya Verma from rediff.com on film reviewing stated that " Saawan Kumar's idea of a woman-oriented subject reflects the industry's mentality when it comes to women. His worst crime is that he uses the concept of an 'independent woman' to titillate. And he exploits a pure relationship like motherhood in such a disgusting fashion that it makes Mother the worst movie ever made in my book. Even the attempt at comedy cannot retrieve the film. All it does is irritate and bore you. Rekha's worst performance ever in her career. I wonder what made an actress of her calibre accept this role. Her hairdos are atrocious, her clothes even worse. And it is quite depressing to see her prancing around in frocks!! Jeetendra, Randhir Kapoor and Rakesh Roshan, on the other hand, are reasonably decent in their respective roles.The music, by Dilip and Sameer Sen is nothing to write home about. In fact, if one is forced to choose a saving grace, it would be the beautiful locales in Mauritius. At the end of the film, one only comes out humming 'Murder, murder.'"
