Pre-post Production :

Background:

Saadat Hasan Manto's (1912-1955) short stories set during the devastating partition of the Indian subcontinent were his defining works. These irreverent, unflinching but deeply humane stories, earned him the wrath of the British Indian government and later of Pakistan. The stories were deemed obscene by the courts and he spent his last years fighting legal battles to defend his right to write. Today, his work is seen by both scholars and the reading public as one of the most authentic and independent accounts of the human tragedy of those years.

Casting:

In November 2015, it was reported that Nandita Das had approached actor Irrfan Khan to play the leading role in her film Manto. Nandita said that, "Irrfan fits the role, as he speaks fluent Urdu, looks a lot like Manto and, above all, is a wonderful actor. He has read a lot of Manto himself and is influenced by him."

In May 2016, during the 69th Cannes Film Festival Nandita announced that Nawazuddin Siddiqui had been finalized for the central role of Manto in her next film. Nandita stated that, "I have had Nawazuddin in mind from the very outset, but in India, economics always interferes with art and there was pressure on me to cast a more mainstream star."

Film shooting :

The film was shot on various locations across Mumbai. The shooting continued for 41 days before reaching its endpoint in July 2017.

Manto film songs / music :

The film music composer are Sneha Khanwalkar and Raftaar while the lyricist are Dibakar Banerjee, Simaab Akbarabadi, Meeraji, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Raftaar and Saadat Hasan Manto.

The first song of the film titled as "Nagri Nagri" sung by Shankar Mahadevan was released 31 August 2018. The album released by Zee Music Company on 9 September 2018.

The film reviews are mostly positive from critics. Critical acclaim Bollywood films.

Critics reviews :
  • Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV gave 4 star from 5 star and writes that "Nawazuddin Siddiqui Is Phenomenally Good As The Anguished Writer,Nandita Das' film can be described as the Garam Hawa of our times."
  • Renuka Vyavahare from Times of India rated the film 3 star out of 5 star and stated that "Watch the film for the director's flawless interweaving of Manto's poignant writing into her script and watch it for the words — spoken and unspoken.Nandita Das tries to get into the mind of Manto to understand him as a person and she succeeds to a certain degree."
  • Raja Sen from Hindustantimes rated 3.5 star out of 5 star and appreciate the makers by stating that "Nawaduddin Siddiqui and Rasika Dugal deliver internalised performances in director Nandita Das’ biopic.Rasika Dugal shines so brightly as Manto’s wife that she threatens to hijack the production.Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s own standards, he is improbably brilliant in this deeply internalised role, his wariness like a protective cloak.Rajshri Deshpande is superb as Chugtai, and several fine actors show up as characters in Manto’s life or stories, including Ranvir Shorey, Divya Dutta and — in the film’s most haunting moment — the great Vinod Nagpal.Das directs with affection but can’t seem to enforce consistency."
  • Anna MM Vetticad from the firstpost gave 3.5 star out of 5 star and writes that "Nawazuddin Siddiqui is the best he has ever been in Nandita Das' stirring portrait of a genius."
  • Suhani Singh from India Today also rated the 3.5 star out of 5 star and noted that "Nandita Das film is a brilliant portrait of a self-destructive creator, Nawazuddin Siddiqui looks the part and for the most part, feels it too. But the real joy of Nandita Das's film is to see its supporting characters make brief appearances."
